Arctic Open 2023: PV Sindhu Sails into Quarterfinals

The two-time Olympic medallist, Pusarla Venkata Sindhu slammed her way into the quarter-finals in the women’s singles of the Arctic Open 2023 Badminton. She clinched victory in straight games after dominating Chinese Taipei’s Wen Chi Hsu. She produced an amazing performance to win the matches in straight games against her opponent Wen Chi Hsu in the round of 16 match at the Vantaa Energia Areena in Finland on Thursday, 12th October 2023. Sindhu took just 38 minutes to breeze past Chinese Taipei’s Wen Chi Hsu.

PV Sindhu, who is ranked 13th in the Badminton rankings claimed her spot in the quarter-finals with a score of 21-11, 21-10 to secure her third win exceeding the world’s No. 22 shuttler in many of the matches. These both met earlier in the round of 32 at the 19th Asian Games where PV Sindhu defeated the other shuttler claiming the victory in straight games.

Similar to her first match against former world champion Nozomi Okuhara, the opponent Wen Chi Hsu managed to push her back and create a gap during the early exchanges. But it was not long until Sindhu got back into her form and scored one point after giving up three points to her opponent. She ultimately got a lead of four points at the first break.

With her powerful performance and attacking style of play, Sindhu locked the victory by dominating Chinese Taipei’s Wen Chi Hsu for the rest of the game. Securing a win in the first set, PV Sindhu went for an 8-1 lead at the start of the second set and finally sealed the win ending the match in the next 37 minutes.

The former world champion and an Olympic medallist two times, PV Sindhu is now set on the journey to obtain her first title of the BWF 2023 Badminton season. She will be facing Vietnam’s Thuy Linh Nguyen in the quarterfinals of the BWF Super 500 event which is held today, 13th October 2023. 

On the other hand, Aakarshi Kashyap suffered a loss against a player of the fifth seed hailing from China, Wang Zhi Yi which happened later on yesterday. 

As for the Men’s badminton, the tournament ended for the Indian men shuttlers in the Men’s Singles of the BWF(Badminton World Federation) Super 500 sports event. Kidambi Srikanth lost to Japan’s Kanta Tsuneyama for the third time after he lost the match to his opponent in the round of 16 contest with a scoreline of 21-15, 21-12.

Meanwhile, Kiran George lost to Lu Guang Zhu of China belonging to the fourth seed with a score of 21-10, 22-20.

Additionally, Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto lost to the French pair of Margot Lambert and Anne Tran with a narrow margin of 21-19, 21-19.
